Grain Today - May, 2020

5/5/2020

Good afternoon,

As I write this there will be a big variance on timing in the field with some of you hard at seeding while others will be trying to get 2019 harvest finished. It truly was the harvest from hell. We are seeing a fair bit of spring thrashed grain with values holding up fairly well. Some of the canola is grading 1 CAN with local elevators buying it which is great for the producer. If you are not so fortunate give us a call or txt and we will see what we can do about maximizing your returns.

There is a big variability in quality in the feed wheat and barley we are seeing. Some of it is still good bushel weight, other lots have dropped 5lb/bus. It is very important that you know what you have quality wise so we can hook you up with the right buyer.  It is hard to give indications as to values since quality is so variable.

We are still seeing decent prices for both low vom feed wheat and feed barley in MB and Eastern SK. The bids for grain going west have softened as the feedlots are seeing spring thrashed grain in fairly large volumes. As an example barley is trading at $220-225 delivered Lethbridge May/June and the same values are available for feed barley delivered Elie/Winnipeg area for the same time frame.  Spring thrashed values are $10-$15/MT lower into AB. The mills in MB are being a bit pickier on spring thrashed as most of their output is into hogs.

That being said we have seen pressure just in the last week on feed grains due to the continuing Covid-19 issues with the slaughter facilities in North America. The hog guys and feedlots are all struggling with loss of kill capacity which leaves them wondering what to do going forward. I seldom give an opinion but I would not recommend holding your feed grain looking for last summers prices. I think we still have some downside coming in the feed grain market. A lot of this will be cause by uncertainty because of Covid-19. No one knows what demand for meat will be or even if you can move your finished animals into the food chain in an orderly fashion. There will also be some malt barley that has lost quality due to being pushed back because of lower demand for malt. Can you even imagine how much less beer is being sold in North America right now with no pro sports being played at this time?

The two bright spots right now are old crop yellow peas which are trading at better than $7 in MB and Eastern SK and $8 in AB. There is also some decent new crop yellow pea prices with AoG available. The other one is milling oats. They still bring $3.50 to $4.00 depending on location. If you have any of these 2 commodities give us a call.

We are looking for:
Feed wheat in MB and Eastern SK
Feed barley in all 3 provinces.
Milling oats in MB and AB
Yellow peas in SK
Heated and green canola

Until next month, stay safe and carry on farming!
